Behind the #Tree_House Web Site
"Imagine if every show on TV began with the caveat 'This broadcast is optimized for Sony 27 inch Color
Trinitron' or 'Please buy a wide-screen TV to better view this program'."
[ Jeffrey Veen in "Hotwired Style", Wired Books ]
While moving the #Tree_House site to its new location, I had the chance to redesign the pages. I added
some features such as dynamic content and the interactive Rumor Board, edited a few graphics, and updated
pictures and links.
Having the above quotation in mind, I tried to make the site look good in most of the browsers used by
the online community without losing too much of the look and feel of the original #Tree_House site. I tested the site
with Netscape 3.0 and 4.0, MS Internet Explorer 3.0 and 4.0, and Opera 3.0, using a variety of screen resolutions and color schemes. I even checked the site with
Netscape 1.1 although I honestly think that if you are still using Netscape 1.1 you should consider upgrading!
My personal favorite is MS IE 4.0 (even though Opera is DAMN fast and fits on one, yes, ONE floppy) but I only say
that to stir up some discussion around the ongoing browser
wars ;-)
Unfortunately, a web site is never really finished. Itīs an ongoing project. It usually generates more questions
than it provides answers. But, hey, itīs fun after all, especially when, after six months or so, a new browser
comes along and you can throw all your skills into the garbage bin and start all over - Reboot your Brain!
I recently saw a great IBM newspaper ad. I liked it so much that I cut it out and put it up on my wall. It reads:
"Whatīs the difference between a little kidīs homepage
and the homepage of a multi-million corporation?
Nothing. Thatīs the problem."
Well, Iīd like to think of an opportunity rather than a problem. The message is clear: Everyone can do it. Even you!
No matter if you are male or female, 17 or 77, Russian, American, or whatever. If you are reading this you have already
proven that you can operate a computer and use your brain to navigate the Web. Now itīs time to work the Web!
Teach yourself the basics of HTML, surf the Web and look at what others have done and how they achieved it (Web
browsers offer a nifty tool called "View Source"). And when you get stuck all you have to do to ask around. The Net
is full of geeks that have nothing better to do than answering your questions. Be nice and people will treat you
nicely. Itīs that simple.
I hope you enjoy the new #Tree_House site. In order to make this site even better, I would like to encourage
everyone to contribute to it. Iīll make sure your work is online as soon as possible.
Before I come to an end with this boring monologue I would
like to thank Hawk` for all the effort he put into the original #Tree_House page.
Without his work this would have never been possible.
