Blogs, beer, and sex
Porn as a substitute for sex? It may work out from time to time, but it doesn't really replace the sensation of actual intercourse. Weblogs printed in a book or even read out loud on stage? Same thing.
Did I enjoy the Blogs! reading in Berlin last night? Absolutely! Do I think the event managed to explain weblogs to the outside world? Nope. But most likely, that wasn't the goal of the event anyway.
Blogland has produced some outstanding talent in the last couple of years, and now some of those blog authors are coming out of their closet, stop hidinig behind their alias or URL and sit on top of a stage in the center of Berlin and manage to entertain a crowd. Is this literature? Is this journalism? Is this pop? Who cares?
Maybe though I should care. I look at podcasting and ask: "Is this really new? What's so special about recorded radio shows?" I have talked to people about weblogs and their initial reaction was: "So why is this different from building your homepage with Frontpage?" Applying the same logic (or skepticism) to a few folks sitting on a stage, does the question "What does this got to do with weblogs?" have any justification? Probably so. If weblogs are about giving people a voice, why do we even need a stage?
Because some of us, at least from time to time, just like to be social. We like to meet and greet. We like to interact. We enjoy having a beer with virtual friends. We share personal stories with fellow bloggers. We fancy having sex with our favorite blog heroine. And then we watch porn.
