BMG's new CD pricing

"What you see, is what you get." Or even: You get what you pay for. BMG announced a new three-tier pricing scheme for audio CDs to be introduced in Germany in August.

  • € 9.99: title info printed on CD label. No jewel box, no booklet, no inlay.
  • € 12.99: the "standard" CD with jewel box and tray.
  • € 17.99: a deluxe version of the CD with bonus tracks and videos (similar to DVDs).
I think this an interesting approach and consumer response should be quite positive. The industry is finally waking up and willing to risk something new. OK, it's not radical but it might be the right strategy to counter digital distribution. [via DMC Weblog]
