Taxi, please

I am reading my morning newspaper and there is a two-page article about rude cab drivers, chauffeurs that won't accept short-distance rides (even though this is required by law), drivers that don't know their way around town and/or take you on a detour. OK, there is tough competition in the taxi business and there are many black sheep. Less and less people are choosing to call a cab and this increases competition even more. The suggested solution? "Increase prices for a ride..." because cab drivers need to make a living, too. Now can someone explain to me how increasing prices will stimulate more business?

While on the subject, if you need a cab in Hamburg, call 211211. Hansa Taxi has the nicest drivers, the cleanest cars, they always accept credit cards, and their airport pick-up service is great.

Comments to this weblog entry:

best thing: "a cab will pick you up within 6 minutes." They are always on time. :)

The airport pickup-service is wonderful, because I don't like to get into filthy old cabs where the driver complains about the short ride for only 15 €...

Hansa Taxi seems to know how to play marketing pretty well, especially since putting brand names into commodity markets normally isn't too easy. First, a longer article in Brand Eins (with a cool fullpage photo of the company bosses), then a shorter story in Der Spiegel, and now even one in your local newspaper. They even have a good website. I didn't find me in need of a cab ride in Hamburg so far, but still, I already connect "Hamburg cabs = Hansa Taxi".

It's an inanity not unique to Hamburg: see this article (might be dynamic, so go to http://timesdispatch.com and search the TD for "Pocahontas Parkway"). They built a new toll road near Richmond. They charged us$1.50 for each car. Not enough people are using the expensive road. So what do they do? Raise the rates to us$2.00!
