The Gmail virus
Every idiot on this planet must have heard about Gmail by now. It's Google's new email service, allowing users to store up to 1GB of emails and attachments. Not only have we all heard and read about Gmail, we all started to use it. We signed up, got our own account, and invited friends and family. We all went completely nuts.
Oh, Google doing email now? One gigabyte?! And it's for free? Wow. I have always wanted yet another free email acount. I must have this now.
After inviting just about anyone we could think of (I gave Aunty Sarah a Gmail account for her 70th birthday!) we started to write about open Gmail invitations in our weblogs and people offered just about anything (money, cars, sex) just to be part of the Gmail-crowd. (By the way, I just got another four open invitations, so if you are a good-looking female and available for some quality entertainment in Hamburg, drop me a line, you'll get your Gmail account, I promise.)
Why am I writing all this? First of all, it's amazing to see viral marketing in action. Google created a compelling offer (1 GB email) in a space that had turned into a commodity a long time ago (free web-based email). Google limited access to the service (by invitation only) and people went crazy begging for access. Google is a multi-billion-dollar company bound to go public in a record-setting IPO, yet they don't advertise their new service. They don't even mention it on their homepage. They just continue to allow existing Gmail users to invite a few friends, the message will spread. Google doesn't need to spend a nickle on advertising as long as we just continue to write about Gmail and give out invitations. In contrast, look at MSN Hotmail or Yahoo! Mail buying print and billboard advertising and beefing up their service offering in order to catch up.
You start to wonder: was this Google's masterplan or did it happen simply as a result of their phased launch strategy? Either way, it seems to work in Google's favor. And we became part of their game.

What I don't understand: Where is it written that I will have my primary email on google? Where do I sign over all of my existing accounts as everybody seems to asume?
In my case I would like to have google as a webmailer for mailadresses I use in blogs and things like it, hoping they will better cope with spam. Because the one I used till now is lost in spam and I tend to keep the new one clear.
And normal mails which won't be rejected because of filled qouta.
As for now, I have not seen many advertisements and am surprised to see a webapplikation which is finally combining webuse with keyboard shortcuts. It is a new useful toy. Nothing more, nothing less.
Google wants to scan my mails? Okay. I am old enough to use pgp or other relevant protections.
Signing up for a google account does not mean I sign my soul over.
And yes, I begged for one, only to find that nicole was already taken. ;o) Invalid was available at that time.
Hello Heiko,
I totally aggree with you. And I don’t think this “simply happens”. Google seems to employ some kind of marketing/pr genius. It’s not only the current viral marketing campaign for Gmail. Essential for this succes was the clever trick of making viral recommendations a scarce ressource (which sounds like a contradiction at first). All the other viral campaigns try to push us to recommend something to as much new contacts as possible. The Gmail campaign tries to uphold the impression that we are doing those we are inviting a real favor – because invitations are (seem to be) scarce. Clever.
But this is not their biggest marketing “wonder”. What I find most fascinating is how they succeed in presenting their company – now a billion-dollar biggie with some 2.000 employees - as a nice, cool little startup, who is still kind of an underdog. Genius at work.
And BTW, the most compelling feature with Gmail isn’t the “free” 1 Gig space. Actually Gmail is simply the first Webmail service that at least in some respect works better than a desktop client. (It is still somewhat clumsy compared to Outlook, but it is really surprising what they did achieve with an HTML frontend).
What makes Google sometimes such a frightening player in the market is the combination of this marketing/pr wizardry with some really cool product offerings.
In terms of web-clients to email, Oddpost.com has been a long-time favorite of mine. However, Oddpost isn't cross-browser and pretty much IE only.
Also Oddpost seems to get slow once you have MANY emails in your inbox.
Gmail seems to have found a few interesting workarounds.
@Nicole

That is written nowhere ... but IMHO a lot of the really cool features (the nice tagging system, Google searching for ALL of my mail archive ...) of Gmail simply won't work, if Gmail ist just another secondary mail adress of mine.
These (and others) are the key features of Google, not the "free" 1 Gig Space. (Why are people always so obsessed with "free" offerings? Nothing's free in the business world! You always have to pay! You may not notice the payment immediately ...)
I can't use gmail in my opera browser so it sucks.
A great Company with big technical Knowledge can't build a cross-browser System?
Why?
@Markus
I am considering setting some maillinglists to google and will use it for features like status mails of some kind. But I am not in need for a decent search feature - my mailer does use regexp; that is enough for me ;o)
@nicole (das jetzt mal auf deutsch, weil ich's auf englisch sicherlich nicht korrekt hinbekomme ...)
glücklich ist ... wer mit dem zufrieden sein kann, was er JETZT hat!
And yes, I begged for one, only to find that nicole was already taken.
No one took it, they just won't allow you to use common names.
I got my gmail account a little while ago. And after trying and trying it, I came to the conclusion that it still is a true beta. Thus, not ready for my ‘mama’ yet. There still needs to be a lot of work done on various aspects of the service.
Yet, their way of using the noise of their new service is brilliant!
Overall, another gadget from Google. However I have to admit that I start a bit wondering about the long-term of Google. Will they be able to beat Yahoo! They have a great search portal with Alltheweb.com. In my opinion are their results quite often better than those from Google. Will Yahoo ever put this is direct competition with Google, copying Google’s business model? Would be interesting.
Interesting.. We came to the same conclusion however I think it's part of an overarching plan to take over the whole email / IM / social network...
It seems that inviting friends to join Gmail is temporarily unavailable. May the Google add some new servers to make way for more accounts and restablish that fancy marketing tool....
hi,
I live in Cyprus, a very small island in the mediterenian and I just found out about Gmail yesterday even though it's been out since May. I wish to write an article about it in my college magazine that almost 5000 people would read it. But to get the highest and clearest opinion am looking for a beta account myself to try it before writting about it. So if any of you still has any invites, please consider me for the sake of news.
Thanks,
Vassili E.T.
it seems no 1 has any more of these invites...if any 1 got one 2 spare ill be grateful...tnx

I've just been staying at home waiting for something to happen. I just don't have much to say right now, but so it goes. I've basically been doing nothing to speak of, but shrug. Today was a loss. I don't care. That's how it is.
More or less nothing seems important. It's not important. Shrug. Whatever. I've just been hanging out doing nothing, but eh. I can't be bothered with anything lately.
Google Stillstand?
Not much on my mind lately, but that's how it is. My life's been dull these days, but such is life. I haven't been up to much recently.
Pretty much nothing seems worth doing. I've just been letting everything happen without me these days. I've just been sitting around waiting for something to happen, but whatever.

I haven't gotten much done recently. I don't care. My life's been basically boring these days. Whatever. More or less nothing exciting going on lately, but pfft.
I can't be bothered with anything lately. My mind is like a fog. I've just been hanging out not getting anything done. I've more or less been doing nothing.

More or less not much exciting happening today. I just don't have anything to say. More or less nothing seems worth bothering with.
My life's been pretty dull lately, but I guess it doesn't bother me. I haven't been up to anything recently. Maybe tomorrow. I've pretty much been doing nothing worth mentioning. I haven't gotten much done these days. Pretty much nothing seems worth thinking about.
