Ringtone rant
Correct me if I am wrong, but let me assume here for a minute that teenagers and young adults spend a good amount of their spare time watching MTV, VH-1, VIVA, etc. Tuning into music television these days, you can't help but notice that there are a lot of commercials promoting ringtones. Actually, you might get the impression that ringtones commercials are all that's left on those stations. These ads come in different screaming colors and feature eye soring animations, but generally follow this format: a limited selection of ringtones and lots of fine-print.
Now I don't want to tell teenagers how to spend their pocket money. If peer pressure demands that you really must have this annoying polyphonic ringtone that, if you listen closely, somewhat resembles a song you heard on the radio, fine. If you are willing to invest 2 Euro for 20 seconds of trashy Midi, ok. If I had kids, I'd make sure to show them how to compose their own ringtones, but that's not the point I am trying to make here.
What worries me, no, what makes me furious, is the fact that 90 per cent of those ringtone commercials go ways to conceal that they are not just selling a single ringtone but rather a monthly subsrciption. Or they briefly mention that, yes, indeed, it's a subscription, but don't tell you the total monthly rate or cancellation terms. Hence the 20 lines of super-small fine-print.
Have you ever tried to read the fine-print? Did you manage to get futher than line two before the next commercial started? I think I've got pretty good eyesight and my eyes are used to computer screens, video games, and stock tickers bars, but I have never succeeded to read the entire terms and conditions. Not even close.
I am not a friend of media regulation, but I think this parctice needs to stop. Either ringtone providers should find a better way (read: no fine-print) to describe what it is they are trying to sell (to an audience consisting predominantly of minors!) or we need a disclaimer similar to the one used to warn of risks and side effects of OTC drugs: subscribing to ringtones may be more expensive than you think.
I am not a lawyer, but I'm not so sure these ringtone commercials would hold up in court. German price regulatory law (specifically §1, 6.1 Preisangabenverordnung) states that prices must be clearly visible and legible. The Federal Court of Justice has already ruled that TV commercials for telephone directory services are tenders and companies must state the prices according to the regulation.
In somewhat related news, 12 percent of 13 to 24 year olds are in the red -- on average, they are 1,800 (!) Euro in debt. (Source: debt collectors)

there are loads of people whose business is based on the fact that customer don't read the fine print. these are individuals ("portoabzocker" bei ebay) as well as big companies (jamba). this strategy might be perfectly legal and even morally accepted by an increasing percentage of our population, but i still think it is disgusting.
I am 53 and pleased to see people aware and upset at the flim flam business practice of people who are low lifes to conduct business in these shady ways. I am getting ready to launch an assault on society, or the disgusting parts of our society that people do not rail against, but should be.
Here are some things that i think should be taken by the balls NOW!
1. credit card companies hanging extremely high and unfair fees on us just for us being human. It is something that should be regulated and brought into fairness to the consumer.
2. It should not be allowed that companies can blackmail you into using their product by threatening that they will not do business with you unless they get you into a year contract. That is BULLSHIT. It should not exist, but it does---so let's change it.
3. I can see something else that disturbs me. Convenience stores are slowly phasing out cans of pop and forcing people to purchase plastic bottles that are 20 0z. instead of the usual 12 oz. that I am used to. Notice the next time you want a diet pepsi in a can. You will either find it located in the cooler so that it is not as easy to get to as the plastic bottles and there are not very many cans in stock. Doing away with cans should not happen. It is bad enough that people are getting fat, kids especially, and pop is one of the huge contributors to it, and then they want to shove larger containers in the hands of kids---these greed freaks need to be eliminated, well stopped.
4. You cannot buy a single 12oz. can of beer anymore. They force you to buy a 24oz. can if you want a single beer---yet we are told how harmful alcohol is and how it damages your life--then in the same breath they are pushing it at you in quantities you do not desire.
Look around our world and notice what greed is doing to us. We need to correct the society we live in and it really is up to YOU and ME to fight these things for change.
Messages to the senators, congress, and then perhaps a little destruction and motivation is in order.
