IDN... what?

Denic recently announced the introduction of new domain names supporting the IDN(Internationalized Domain Name) standard. As of 1. March 2004, you will be able to register your umlaut-domain. Martin Roell can be Martin Röll after all.

Comments to this weblog entry:

I like my roell.net. And as long as Google gets it right and knows that "ö = oe", I'll be fine.

I'm not sure what to think of IDN-Domains. For years we have been teaching people that "domain names never have 'umlauts'". Now it's changing. This will make some people very confused. Is there really a demand for Umlaut-Domains?

Do not mary people with Umlaut surnames (If you can't resist, let them change their name to yours). Don't give your babies names like Ägidus, Amélie or Azinoé! Rename Köln to Fordstadt.
Leave cities like Königswinter, München or Hückeswagen!
The rest of the problem will be solved by evolution within less than 100 years ;-).

Martin: There's not much demand for domains with Umlauts, that's for sure. (I'm already looking forward to buecher.de suing bücher.de etc.) The real demand is coming from Asia where people have been unable to get their company or family name as a domain. And, Rainer: I'm pretty sure some people take that into account. :)
