Jänner 2004, 9:38 h Firefox, I'm loving itI have been a hardcore Internet Explorer user even since, let me think, IE 5.0. I only recently started looking into Mozilla again, tabbed browsing was the driving force. Yesterday I installed the Mozilla crew's latest release, Firefox 0.8. Yes, they changed names again but this time they hope that Firefox will remain. Naming issues aside, Firefox is fun. It feels complete and very mature. Now if only the MT text formatting buttons would work in Firefox, I'd be a happy man. As a business user, I still have to rely on Internet Explorer for a range of applications I am using, but for personal browsing, Firefox will become my preferred browser. heiko, 17. Jänner 2004, 18:35 h Farewell to WebmonkeyFor several years, Webmonkey: The Web Developer's Resource has been a prime resource and inspiration. Now Terra Lycos decided to pull the plug. Good-bye, Monkey. heiko, 17. Jänner 2004, 14:16 h DJ Danger Mouse - The Grey AlbumDanger Mouse positioned his Grey Album as an art project using vocals of Jay-Z's Black Album recorded over beats and samples taken from the Beatles' White Album. EMI, the rights holders to the Beatles' recordings issued a cease and desist order to record stores selling it last week, since the sampling was done without permission from either Jay Z or The Beatles. So is copyright law making froms of art illegal? It certainly is an area with many shades of grey. heiko, 17. Jänner 2004, 13:44 h BlogTimes are backBlogTimes - the comeback. heiko, 17. Jänner 2004, 8:56 h Toll Collect no moreBreaking news: Stolpe says Toll Collect is toast. heiko, 16. Jänner 2004, 21:46 h A European E-Tech?I find this idea appealing. Let me day dream for a minute. It's a geeky dream of course, but hey, what would you expect anyway? O'Reilly's Emerging Technologies Conference has turned into a hit. As attending bloggers have been confirming in the recent years, the conference is very well organized, it has that certain buzz, it has momentum, it attracks a very interesting crowd that is treated with respect and encourged to interact through all means possible. Now could there be a European version of E-Tech? I envision a symbyosis of reboot and blogtalk with a flavor of Jupiter Events and Demo and a European focus. Something impactful yet intimate. At a nice location that can be reached easily (even for participants from, say, Estonia or Portugal). A platform for presentation and discussion. A broadcast of enterpreneurial spirit. A channel for feedback from the streets. Wouldn't that be fun? heiko, 16. Jänner 2004, 21:17 h Giving head onThe winners of the Berlinale (Germany's renowned international film festival) have been selected. Director Fatih Akin, a Hamburg native, was awarded the Golden Bear for "Gegen die Wand" (Engl. "Head On"), a portrait of second-generation Turks living in Germany, starring Sibel Kekilli, a young actress with a little history. While claiming that Head On was her first role in a movie, she triggered German media to do some background checking. And, voila, two years ago she had already appeared in a few porn flics under the name of "Dilara" (warning, adult content: Dilara's profile). Whether the timing of these "secret discoveries" were a PR stunt or purely coincidental remains unanswered. Undoubtedly, Sibel Kekilli seems to a talented woman. So what is Germany's reaction? Are we shocked? Will we boycott the movie? I doubt it. We have seen enough naked flesh while growing up watching Fa shower gel commericals on prime time TV. Even Janet Jackson's brest failed to impress us. So a movie by an aspiring German director starring a former porn "star"? Sounds like a commercial success story to me. heiko, 16.
